Privacy Policy

We collect what Hello needs to call your parent and keep your family informed, and nothing else. We never sell it, never use it for advertising, and never let AI providers train on it. You can export or delete it from the app at any time.

This Privacy Policy explains how Illuminant Inc (“Illuminant”, “we”, “us”) handles personal information in Hello: the daily calls, the Hello family app, the Hello Parent app, and this website. It applies to everyone whose information Hello handles:

  • Account holders and family members: the people who use the Hello family app, including the person who subscribes.
  • Parents: the people Hello calls. We call them “your parent” here, though they may be any loved one.
  • Emergency contacts added to a family’s alert plan.
  • Visitors to hello.illuminantinc.com.

If you set up Hello for someone, please share the parts of this policy that concern them. Our Consent and recording policy explains how we ask your parent for permission before the calls begin.

Health-related information. Because Hello talks with your parent about their day, transcripts, summaries and concerns can include information about their health, medications, mood or safety. We use it only to provide Hello to your family: to deliver reminders, write summaries and send alerts. See the section on consumer health data below.

Audio. Hello does not currently keep audio recordings of calls. If recording is ever offered, it will be off unless your parent agrees on a call, as described in the Consent and recording policy.

Payment details. All purchases go through Apple. We never see or store your card number.

How we use it

We use personal information to:

  • place Hello’s daily calls and answer your parent’s calls, with the memory and reminders that make them personal;
  • write summaries, notice concerns and send notifications, texts and alert calls under your family’s alert plan;
  • show your family the call history, insights and reminders in the app;
  • manage your subscription, gifts and family circle;
  • keep Hello safe, secure and working: preventing abuse, fixing problems, and checking the quality of summaries and alerts;
  • answer your questions and requests;
  • meet legal obligations.

We do not use it for advertising, and we do not build profiles to sell or share.

AI and the companies that help us run Hello

Hello’s conversations and summaries are produced by AI models that we access from specialist providers. These service providers process information only on our instructions, only to provide Hello, and under contracts that bar them from using it to train their models:

Provider What they do for Hello What they receive
Twilio Places and connects phone calls; sends and receives text messages Phone numbers, call audio as it streams, text messages
xAI Runs the live voice conversation Call audio as it streams and the call’s instructions, including the parent’s first name, reminders, topics and relevant memories
OpenAI Backup voice conversation if the primary provider is unavailable; search over what Hello remembers The same as xAI when used for a call; short remembered facts for search
Anthropic Writes summaries, notices concerns and organises memories after each call The call transcript and the parent’s profile details needed for the summary
Apple Sign in with Apple, push notifications, and App Store purchases Your Apple account identifier, notification content, purchase records
GoDaddy Hosts our servers and database in the United States Everything we store, which is encrypted in transit and backed up in encrypted form

We may also disclose personal information:

  • to your family circle, as described below;
  • when the law requires it, for example in response to a valid subpoena or court order. Where we can, we tell the account holder first;
  • to protect someone’s safety, when we believe in good faith that it is needed to prevent serious harm;
  • in a business transfer, if Illuminant is merged or sold. This policy would continue to apply to the information, and we would tell you in advance.

We do not sell personal information, and we do not “share” it for cross-context behavioural advertising, as California law defines those terms. We have not done so in the past 12 months.

Who in your family sees what

  • Each family circle has an owner who subscribes, plus the admins and members they invite.
  • Everyone in the circle can see call summaries, mood, reminders and alerts for the parents in the circle.
  • Full transcripts are visible only to the people the owner or an admin allows.
  • Each person chooses which alerts they receive.
  • Nobody outside the circle can see your parent’s information. Hello won’t discuss your parent with anyone else on a call.
  • Illuminant staff do not read transcripts in the ordinary course. A small number of authorised staff can view a family’s call content only when needed to answer a request from the family, investigate a safety or abuse report, or meet a legal obligation. Every such access requires a written reason and is logged.

How long we keep it

Information Kept for
Call transcripts 18 months, or 3, 6 or 12 months if your family chooses a shorter period in the app
Audio recordings (if ever enabled) 90 days
Summaries, concerns, reminder history and what Hello remembers For as long as your parent’s profile exists
Service events 24 months; they never contain what anyone said
Data exports you request 7 days after they’re ready
Backups 30 days, then overwritten
Consent records, text-message opt-outs, App Store and gift records, and records of privacy requests As long as the law requires or allows, even after an account is deleted, so we can prove consent, honour opt-outs and keep accurate financial records

Exporting and deleting your data

Export. Owners and admins can download everything Hello holds for their family circle in Settings › Privacy & your data: transcripts, summaries, concerns, memories, reminders and the alert plan. The download is ready within minutes and is available for 7 days.

Delete. In Settings › Privacy & your data you can delete a parent’s profile, your whole family circle, or your own account.

  • Deletion takes effect immediately: calls stop and the information disappears from the app.
  • You have 30 days to change your mind, in case it was a mistake.
  • After those 30 days we permanently erase the information from our systems, including the call and message records held by our phone provider.
  • Copies in our encrypted backups are overwritten within a further 30 days.

You can also write to us to make any request. We may keep information we are legally required to keep (for example, a legal hold) and the records listed in the retention table.

Security

  • Hello’s data is stored on servers in the United States. It is encrypted in transit, and backups are encrypted.
  • Staff access is limited to the few people who need it, protected by passwords and two-factor codes, and logged.
  • On your iPhone, the app keeps a small offline cache protected by the iPhone’s own data protection, and signs you out everywhere if it detects a stolen sign-in.
  • No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your information, we will tell you as the law requires.

Your choices and rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to access, correct, export or delete your personal information. Much of it you can do yourself in the app, and for the rest you can write to support@illuminantinc.com. We answer within 30 days, verify requests by confirming them from the account’s Apple sign-in or its email address, and won’t treat you differently for making one. A parent can make a request about their own information directly, even though the family manages the account.

California residents. Under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended (CCPA), you have the right to know:

  • the categories and specific pieces of personal information we collect;
  • the sources and purposes of that collection;
  • the categories of third parties we disclose it to.

You also have the right to delete and to correct your personal information, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights.

  • The categories we collect are set out above: identifiers, personal records, commercial information, internet and device activity, audio (while a call streams), sensitive personal information (health-related information and Apple account identifiers), and inferences (mood and concerns).
  • We use sensitive personal information only to provide the service you asked for, so the right to limit its use does not add restrictions beyond what we already do.
  • We do not sell or share personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of.
  • You may use an authorised agent. We will ask the agent for proof of your permission and may ask you to confirm your identity.

Other US states. Residents of states with comprehensive privacy laws (including Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, Oregon and others) have similar rights to access, correct, delete and port their data and to opt out of sale, targeted advertising and profiling. We don’t sell data, target ads or profile people for decisions with legal effects. If we decline a request, you can appeal by replying to our answer, and we will respond within the time the law requires.

Consumer health data

Some states, including Washington, Nevada and Connecticut, give extra protection to “consumer health data”. Hello may collect health-related information from what your parent says on calls and from reminders the family sets up.

  • We collect and use it only to provide Hello: to deliver reminders, write summaries and send alerts to the family circle.
  • We share it only with the family circle and the service providers listed above.
  • We never sell it.
  • Your parent or the family can see it, delete it and withdraw consent at any time, as described on this page and in the Consent and recording policy.

Hello is not a health care provider and is not covered by HIPAA.

Children

Hello is meant for adults. You must be 18 or older to create an account. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If a child’s information reaches us (for example, if a grandchild talks on a call), it is handled like any other transcript. A parent or guardian can ask us to delete it.

This website

hello.illuminantinc.com does not use cookies, advertising trackers or third-party analytics, and loads no outside scripts or fonts. Like any web server, ours keeps standard access logs (IP address, browser type, the page requested) for a short time for security. The gift page checks a gift code with our server when you open it and does not store anything in your browser.

Changes to this policy

When we make a meaningful change, we will update the date at the top of this page and tell account holders in the app before the change takes effect.
